Usually if you start to choke, and there are people around, a first-aider would put their arms around you from behind and pull upwards and inwards. If you are on your own and your airway becomes blocked with food, knowing how to do this could save your life.
Find a chair
If you start choking, find yourself a chair to perform the manoeuvre on. Line your abdomen area up to the flat middle back of a chair for the best way of targeting the airways.
Now use both hands to grip the sides of the chair, then push against it to exert enough force to try to dislodge the obstruction. Using the corner of a chair could cause injury, so stick to the back of one.
Use your hands
Another method is to use your hands. Place a bunched-up fist in the space just underneath the ribcage above
Use the other hand to push up and in sharply, in a J-shaped motion. The pressure from the movement should expel the obstruction, allowing you to breathe again.
