Brainwaves weekly: quick DIY projects

Create a dog bed at home1 of 6

Ready for bed

I wanted to make beds for my dogs Molly and Toby. So I cut an old quilt cover into squares and stitched them together, leaving one side open. I stuffed them with old pillows, then used the buttons from the duvet to fasten the opening. My pups love their new beds and I can remove the covers and wash them easily too.Jill Copeland, Barton-upon- Humber, Lincs

Baby proofing advice2 of 6

Got it covered

With small children around, I needed to baby-proof some shelves. I found an old piece of pipe insulation in the shed that I thought would be just the job. I cut it to size and used it to cover corners and sharp edges around the house. I feel better now the kids are protected. Helen Goodall, Bulkington, Warwicks

Heavy lifting tip3 of 6

Wheelie good idea

I had a bag of compost that I needed to move around the garden, but it was awkward and heavy to carry. I didn't have a wheelbarrow, so I decided to use my wheelie bin instead! I hauled my compost on to the top of the bin, and was able to drag it around my garden without breaking my back. Rosemary Atherton, Rossendale, Lancs

Fireplace DIY4 of 6

My first crush

I wanted a crushed-glass fire surround for my fireplace, but it would set me back hundreds. So when I spotted some coasters that would create the same effect, I bought a pile of them. Back home, my daughter Brogan, 12, carefully stuck the coasters around my fireplace using superglue. I'm thrilled with her handiwork.Natalie Cartwright, Huddersfield, W Yorks

Easy gardening craft5 of 6

Make a stand

I wanted to raise my garden pots off the ground to ensure good drainage, but I found flowerpot feet too expensive. Instead, I cut an old wooden shelf into strips. Then I stapled them to a wire hoop to create a stand. It does the job perfectly and didn't cost me a penny.George Skipworth, Hull, E Yorks

Water bottle crafts6 of 6

Don’t lose your bottle

Whenever I go for a walk, I always take a water bottle. But I hated having to carry it in my hand, so I decided to make myself a bottle bag. I dug out some leftover fabric, which I sewed into a cylindrical shape that was perfect for the size of my refillable bottle. Finally, I added an adjustable strap that I'd recycled from an old handbag. Karen McGuire, Cleethorpes, Lincs
