Brainwaves weekly: crafts for the home
CASH CARD
My husband and I wanted a stylish money box for our daughter, but they were expensive to buy. Instead, we bought a cheap box frame, which we personalised with a cute picture from a birthday card. Then we cut a coin slot in the top. Now, our daughter has a lovely hand-made money box and can change the picture in it whenever she wants. Claire Brooks, Morningside, Edinburgh
SEW USEFUL
Instead of throwing away an old pair of jeans, I turned them into a stylish rucksack. Following an online tutorial, I cut out all the shapes I needed from my jeans, then stitched them together using my sewing machine, adding a long zip for the opening. It's perfect for long walks and shopping trips, and my kids love it too! Marie Godlova, Wavertree, Liverpool
MIND THE GAP
I had a gap between my washing machine and my kitchen cupboards that I wanted to cover, but I couldn't find any doors the right size. So, I made some myself using the slats of an old wooden pallet. I sanded down the wood and screwed on two latches to keep it shut. I love my home-made doors and they only cost me £8! Sharon Frostick, Hemel Hempstead, Herts
SEATING PLAN
Frustrated with my kitchen seat cushions sliding off, I came up with an idea to hold them in place. I stitched short lengths of elastic to the bottom of each side of the chair back. Then, I tied the cushion straps to the elastic. It was really easy, and now my cushions stay on my seats. Stella Williamson, Bedford
PRECIOUS STONES
After my daughter Louise collected some pretty pebbles on her beach walks, she decided to paint them for her garden. She used acrylic paints to draw on pictures of fruit, veg and herbs before coating each pebble with waterproof lacquer. She then dotted them around the garden and I think they look fantastic. TWITTER FEED
My mum loved china cups and saucers. When I cleared out her flat, I thought her collection was too nice to throw away, so I turned her cups and saucers into bird feeders. I glued them together with ceramic glue. Then, I used garden twine to attach them to a stand. Finally, I added my home-made peanut butter and seed feed mix. Now the birds flock to our garden.
