Brainwaves weekly: great crafts for your garden
Stone the CROWS
I found the head of a small scarecrow toy in my garden, so I thought I'd bring him back to life. I used a piece of bamboo to make the body, then taped some skewers across the top to make arms. I made him an outfit from a kitchen cloth and gave his face and hat a lick of paint. Now, he looks as good as new! Carole Decarteret, Scarborough, N Yorks
Bee-EAUTIFUL
I decided to turn some empty food cans into buzzy bee herb containers. I wrapped yellow and black electrical tape around them, then added wings made from plastic milk bottles. I turned the lids into faces using googly eyes, a marker pen and some decorative flowers and stuck them on to the side of the can. Finally, I made antennae from pieces of wire. Once my bees were complete, I planted the herbs. I think they look buzzing! Debbie Mangan, Wirral, Merseyside
Prickly CUSTOMER
My daughter Arielle and I decided to turn a water bottle into a cress hedgehog. We cut out one side, then pierced holes into each end and tied string through them to create a hanger. Then we stuck on some googly eyes before filling it with soil and cress seeds and hanging it in the garden. It's going to look great once its cress spikes have grown. Blooming LOVELY
I wanted to decorate a drab fence in my garden. First, I took some unwanted kitchen tidies. I drilled in some drainage holes into the bottom of each tidy. I filled them with compost and added some strawberry plants. I hooked the tidies on to the fence and now they've become beautiful planters. Ann Wilson, Dollar, Clackmannanshire
Sitting PRETTY
I acquired some old dismantled pieces of garden furniture that needed new fixings and a bit of tender loving care. My dad Gary screwed the three chairs together and formed a bench. Then I sanded them down and gave them a fresh coat of paint. Now they live by my pond! Kym Pearson, Guildford, Surrey
Gate IDEA
My husband Les and I had an old metal bed frame that we no longer used. Instead of letting it go to landfill, Les transformed it into a garden gate. He took a jigsaw to the frame and cut it into pieces. Then he welded the gate in place and we gave it a coat of protective paint. Not only does it look fantastic, but it keeps the kids safe too.
