How to let your natural silver strands take centre stage
Let the roots grow
There’s no hard-and-fast rule about when, or if, you should stop colouring your hair and start embracing natural greys. Even if you feel ready, it’s best to have at least two inches of grey growth to begin with, which can take 4-5 months. A lot of people don’t have the patience to wait so choose to colour their hair again, but it’s rewarding if you can stick it out and there are plenty of touch-up products that can help blend your roots during the growing out process.
Consider grey-blending
By blending highlights or balayage through your hair, you can help emphasise your existing grey strands. Thin, subtle highlights are a great way of blending your greys with your base colour, especially face-framing strands, as they can make the colour look more impactful. The shade of the highlights will depend on your base colour and can be deliberately chosen to blend away greys or spotlight them.
Maintenance is key
It’s important that you maintain the hair with a purple toning shampoo. And in order to get frizz-free hair that’s glossy and shiny, it’s all about the blow-dry. A compressed nozzle and bristle brush solves most problems, and a good hairdryer solves everything. Using a deep conditioning hair mask once a week will help restore the natural oils in the hair, keeping coarse greys sleek and shiny.
