This Morning's Dr Zoe Williams shares her top tips for lifting your spirits with exercise this winter
Get outside when the sun’s out
Even if it’s just for a short period, getting some sunlight and fresh air can be beneficial for our mood. Try an everyday task like carrying shopping back from the shops, walking the dog or even doing some gardening.
Get active at home
For days when it’s harder to get outside, there are plenty of movements you can do in your home too. Use tins as weights to do some gentle lifting while watching TV, do squats while the kettle boils or do your household chores like vacuuming. All movement counts!
Stress-busting swim
If you’re feeling stressed, try swimming. The methodical nature of swimming makes it a great exercise to do when feeling stressed, as it gives you a focus.
Move for your mind
If you’re feeling worried or anxious, aerobic activities such as dancing may be a great way to relieve tension, get your heart rate up and boost your energy levels. Dancing can provide relief from tension and reduce stress, anxiety and depression.
Wind down
If you get to the end of the day and realise you haven’t moved as much as you could have, you could do some simple stretches before bed. Relaxing your muscles, including reducing stiffness and discomfort, could improve your sleep.
