5 ways to help elderly parents

Are you worried your older relatives aren’t getting the assistance they need? Here’s how to help, especially if they’re resistant to support

1. Find the right moment

Pick the right day, time and location to bring the topic up. Remember too, who is present will make a big difference to the outcome of the conversation.

2. Be gentle

The tone and language used are key. Recognise that change might be a big step and reassure them every step of the way.

3. Be positive

Focus on the tasks that need doing, not on their weaknesses or shortcomings. Highlight the benefits of having someone else take care of jobs that have become difficult, allowing them time to focus on things they can manage.

4. Listen

Respect their wishes and reassure them that accepting help, while it may be unfamiliar to them, is, in fact, a way of maintaining independence — not losing it.

5. Put them in control

Explore options together, but reassure them that the decision

is theirs — with no commitment or pressure — and that they are free to change, pause or cancel at any time.
