Skip vaginal douching
Spending money on products like douches, deodorants and gels is unnecessary, as the vagina does an incredible job at keeping itself clean. In fact, douching eliminates the healthy bacteria lactobacilli, which in turn can change your pH levels and make you more susceptible to infections such as thrush and bacterial vaginosis.
Get screened regularly
Up to 70 percent of female STIs and infections are asymptomatic, so you won’t know about the presence of a pathogen unless you get screened. Untreated STIs and infections can lead to chronic health problems such as pelvic pain and infertility. If you find in-clinic appointments intimidating, try an at-home test.
Don’t wax
There’s no harm in grooming your bikini line, but pubic hair is your vagina’s first line of defence against bacteria, so having it fully removed could increase your risk of infections.
Mind its microbiome
Much like our gut, the vagina is home to billions of bacteria which make up your microbiome. A healthy vagina is one brimming with lactobacilli, the ‘good’ bacteria responsible for keeping infections at bay. Taking a probiotic or eating a food rich in naturally occurring probiotic bacteria can help increase your vaginal microbiome health.
Let it breathe
Breathable fabrics like cotton and other organic fibres ensure a healthy vagina. Cotton underwear is great for allowing excess moisture to move away from your skin which prevents the growth of bacteria.
