Whenever my mates were tying the knot, I went on a diet. But could I transform for good for my own big day? By Rebecca Nicholson, 33
As my parents hugged me at my graduation, I beamed with pride.
‘You’re finally a nurse!’ Mum said, smiling.
Newly single too, I was ready for a fresh start — if my body would let me.
Throughout my previous relationship, I’d used food as an emotional crutch.
Now, I was 18st 2lb, a size 22, and suffered with back and knee pain.
As I began nursing full-time, I needed painkillers to ease my aches at work.
I felt like a right hypocrite too, preaching to patients about good health when I got out of breath just tying my shoelaces!
If I don’t watch out, I’ll be a patient soon myself, I thought.
But I’d tried endless diets. In the last few years, with friends and family all getting married, I’d done what I now thought of as the bridesmaid diet.
They’d set the date for their big day and ask me to be part of it. I’d then go into overdrive, cutting calories to fit into my bridesmaid dress.
Before the happy couple were even back from their honeymoon, I’d be piling the pounds back on again.
Now, I came up with a new plan.
To help me understand what a sensible portion size was, I began eating frozen microwave meals.
They were quick and had the calories labelled up, which helped keep me on track. In the first week, I lost 3lb.
When I did cook, I swapped red meat for lean protein like fish, and reduced the amount of oil I used.
Mum was my biggest supporter, helping me stay motivated.
But she told me: ‘I love you no matter what.’
Within four months, I’d lost 3st 5lb, and started gently using the treadmill at my local gym.
The exercise along with my healthier eating plan helped me lost 7st 5lb in a year.
I felt like a new woman!
And the good times kept coming when I met a bloke online, and we clicked instantly.
I explained early on that I was maintaining my weight loss and he was super supportive.
After exactly 1000 days together, he popped the question.
‘Yes!’ I whooped, elated.
We married in a beautiful summer ceremony, and as I said my vows in a size-12 mermaid cut dress, it really did feel magical.
I’m no longer in pain or breathless at work, and I hope I inspire others too.
I went from being a bigger bridesmaid to a blushing bride — and I couldn’t be happier!
