Hannah’s Spanish proposal ended in disaster. Then their local supermarket came to the rescue…

Morrisons wedding proposal
Popping the question c. Morrisons

As we wandered through the pretty Barcelona streets twinkling in the dusk, I sighed with happiness.

‘It’s been the perfect weekend, but I’m ready to go home now,’ I smiled to my boyfriend, Charlie.
After walking miles to cram in the famous sights, my legs were aching and I just wanted to get to the airport.
‘Last stop for a photo,’ Charlie said, as we reached the beautiful Arc de Triomf.
Propping his phone against a wall, I thought he was capturing the moment to show my daughter Zara, eight, when we got home.
But suddenly, he sank on to one knee, reached into his pocket and pulled out a sparkling diamond ring.
I gasped in shock and hid my face under my scarf as tourists turned to look.
I’d had no idea!
‘Yes, of course!’ I squealed. ‘I love you!’
Just then, as I glanced over Charlie’s shoulder, I spotted a man in a dark coat bend down and grab my fella’s phone.
‘Oi, stop!’ I yelled, in disbelief.
The wannabe thief started to scurry off, but I was in hot pursuit.
As I caught up with him, he looked startled and handed me the phone back, before hurrying away.

'It'll make an unusual story'

Both Charlie and I were shaken and furious.
‘How could somebody try to mug us during our proposal?’ I said.
‘It’s spoilt the moment slightly,’ Charlie said, sadly.
‘Let’s get out of here,’ I said, taking Charlie’s hand.
Back home the next day, Charlie put the video clip on social media.
‘It’s gone crazy!’ he said a few hours later.
It had attracted more than 600,000 views and comments from all over the world!
By now, we’d got over the shock of
the attempted theft and could laugh about it.
After all, it had all ended well.
‘It’ll make an unusual story to tell the grandkids,’ I chuckled.
A couple of months passed and, one evening, Charlie and I were heading to Morrisons to do our weekly shop.
Popping items into our
trolley, we reached the bakery counter.
But as I got closer, there was a flurry of activity and I could sense something was afoot.
Before I realised what was happening, a couple of bakery staff emerged from the kitchen and approached us with a giant cookie.
As I read the words that were iced on it – Morri Me? – my jaw dropped to the floor.
Spinning round, I saw Charlie crouched on one knee – for the second time in two months!
‘So, will you marry me… again?’ Charlie grinned as shoppers watched on.
‘Yes!’ I cried, giving him a hug as a Morrisons photographer snapped away.
Second time around in the bakery section, my fella’s plans hadn’t gone a-rye!

Afterwards, we were presented with flowers and champagne by the lovely bakers.
Later, Charlie explained everything, telling me how Morrisons had got in touch with him after reading about how our engagement in Barcelona had ended in failure.
‘They asked if I wanted to try again in our local store,’ he told me.
‘I can’t believe it,’ I smiled, touched by Morrisons’ and Charlie’s sweet gesture to make the moment extra special.
It definitely made up for the pain in Spain and will be crumb-thing I remember for years!
Now, we’re planning our big day.
I’m not putting it past Charlie to put a quirky twist on our nuptials, but what’s for sure is I’ll be walking down a very different aisle and at the end of it, saying, ‘I dough!’
He’s my butter half, after all!
