What are dog biscuits?

Biscuit-style dog treats are made often made with grain or another carbohydrate and are baked into different shapes and textures. There is a wide variety of treats, with many being grain-free - perfect your pooch with a sensitive tummy.

Some biscuits will have animal products in the ingredients such as muscle meat, organ meat, fat, and dairy products, but others will use sweeteners or salt for flavour.

Things to look for when buying dog biscuits

Firstly check the label for nasties such as artificial colours, sugar, flavours, and preservatives. Just like with humans, it is important to limit processed foods in a diet as they are not good for you.

It is good to check the label for lower-quality ingredients like meat by-products. If the box says where the ingredients are sourced, this will indicate that the biscuits are of good quality.

Try to avoid any products with salt, syrups, and molasses.

If you are a pet parent with allergies, then try to avoid dog foods with wheat, soy, and corn. There are plenty of grain-free options.

Lastly look for these ingredients such as whole meats, grains, fruits, and vegetables. This will be the most nutritious for your pet.

Animal expert, Dr. Dobias has some good tips for choosing healthy dog treats and suggests “dehydrated, baked or cooked pieces of organic meats are great".
