Dr Linda Simon adds that prebiotics and probiotics have good evidence behind their "important role in supporting the skin; reducing dryness and potentially even helping those with allergies.”
Are there any natural ways to help with a dog’s itchy skin?
In our research, we saw articles promoting the use of ingredients like yoghurts and eggs for helping with dog skin issues. When speaking to Dr Linda Simon, we were not surprised to hear that “many dogs are lactose intolerant and egg allergies are not uncommon." So, it's in your pooch's best interest to avoid both of these.
Although, we’re not knocking the benefits of probiotic yoghurts for our canine friends.
On the other hand, coconut oil can be rubbed onto your dog’s skin, which can “help lock in moisture and reduce itch”, especially if applied after being in the fridge as it can provide a quick, cooling relief. However, there is a downside to this oil. Due to coconut being very tasty, your dog may try to lick it off. This can cause further issues, such as stomach upset and pancreatitis, “due to the high fat content”.
Natural remedies may not be the most effective way to treat itchiness. If you’re seriously concerned about your very itchy dog (which has broken skin), Dr Linda Simon recommends a vet visit.
