Comfortable and supportive dog walking boots for men

If you require sturdy, balanced footwear for daytime strolls, consider dog walking boots for men. After all, having the correct dog walking accessories makes your pooch’s favourite activity easier for you – and even more fun for them. With a pair of decent walking boots, you can keep up with your puppy when you let them off their lead and conquer your fitness goals, too. Don’t panic – there are protective, supportive walking boots there that look decent.

Perhaps the most important reason behind choosing some decent dog walking boots is the protection – with the ability to prevent injury. Dog walking can be tricky if you’re not wearing the right footwear, says Outdoor fashion retailer Cotswold Outdoor. They add that walking boots “last far longer and are much more economical over time,” as opposed to cheaper shoes. This is provided you look after them properly, a topic which is covered below in the FAQs.

Best for support: Peter Storm Men's Snowdon II Walking Boots – View at Go Outdoors

Dog walking equipment isn’t just limited to just decent walking boots. Though you may view a few of them as unnecessary, there are plenty of walking accessories to take with you on hikes. One of our favourite essentials is a special dog-walking bag, which can hold spare poo bags and a collapsible dog bowl if your furry friend gets parched en route, in its multiple compartments. You could even pack a handy dog whistle if your pooch is in training or struggling with recall.

Your dog walking shoes should be equipped for any eventuality. Weather in the UK can be unpredictable and change at short notice. So, a pair of waterproof boots should be the priority, with decent grip and tread to endure different terrains. And, for your pooch, why not grab a waterproof dog coat? They’re adorable – and ideal if you hate that oh-so-familiar wet dog smell. A good pair of walking shoes will keep you outdoors and active – and your pooch content, also.

Verdict: Which is the best?

Our favourite is the Adventurer Men’s Waterproof Walking Boots. Mountain Warehouse is a reliable shop for any outdoor activity, with durable and supportive shoes for dog walking.

How should walking boots fit?

For this dog walking boots for men buying guide, we spoke to Mountain Warehouse, who has offered some fabulous fitting advice to support your feet and ankles on your dog walking adventures:

Socks - come first, which should offer "great cushioning to reduce impact and prevent blister hotspots." Not only this, socks are best made from moisture-wicking materials that will keep your feet happy. New socks (along with your new shoes) will make your next trip memorable and comfortable.

Specific needs - can come in the form of fit, waterproof qualities, material, durability and support.

Measure- your feet, as the size of your walking boots may differ from your regular shoes - much like clothes sizing can vary in brands and style. An accurate size measurement - which is very important - involves placing an A4 sheet of paper flat against the wall and measuring from heel to toe.

Checking the fit - by checking "you have enough space between the end of your toes and the front of the footbed - this should be about a finger's width," says Mountain Warehouse, whilst standing. Your weight can cause your feet to expand - and insoles can prevent a significant size change.

Lace them up - tightly and securely enough, leaving a fingertip space under the crossing over the laces.

Check the volume - so the shoes can suit the shape of your foot. This refers to the "quantity of space your foot takes up in the boot compared to the remaining space," says Mountain Warehouse. If they're too tight, it means there is too little volume - and too much volume causes creasing at the flex point. Volume can be changed by wearing different socks, changing lacing techniques or a new footbed.

How long do walking boots last?

Believe it or not, outdoor brand Mountain Warehouse has some ideas on how long should walking boots last. Which can depend on the type of material and how many times you slip them on for walkies. But, it is suggested that walking boots can "last between 500 and 1200 miles." They can last around two years if you walk around 10 miles a week.

Can walking boots go in the washing machine?

No – walking boots should not be put in the washing machine.

It is recommended that you clean your dog-walking boots after a muddy trip, says outdoor clothing brand Trespass. This is because mud and dirt will get into the cracks of your boots – and will flatten the tread. Eventually, once they are blocked up, you may “lose your footing because the grip that was once there is now lost.” Pack your GPS trackers, dog owners. Thanks to Trespass, we’ve got a few cleaning tips.

To avoid any foot conditions and further medical issues from the long-term effects, Trespass calls all dog walkers to “invest small yet meaningful efforts towards keeping their walking boots sparkling.” And, no, we don't mean poop bags. Not only will your reliable pair remain fabulous, but it’ll save any repair costs.

What you may need:

Soft-bristled brush – which won’t damage the shoe.

Mild detergent – that can remove stains effectively – or boot cleaner.

Medium-sized sponge – for a light scrub.

Warm water – but not too much to avoid any damage.

Soft cloth – for removing any excess solution.

Waterproofing wax or spray – to improve durability.

Cleaning method

Leave your boots to dry before you start cleaning them.

Once dry, get a stiff brush and buff off any mud or dirt.

Use the sponge and detergent to clean the outside.

If necessary, unlace your laces and pop them in the washing machine.

Rinse away the soap with lukewarm water.

Use the soft cloth for any solution left over from the rinse.

Leather boots can be treated with waterproof wax.

Can walking boots be re-soled?

Yes - as even high-quality pairs can have their limits. After plenty of walks, you may not be ready to say goodbye to your favourite dog-walking boots. Your well-loved footwear can show major signs of wear and tear - but, that doesn't mean they're beaten. Instead of throwing them away, consider a repair.

Not only does it save resources, but a repair may save you money, says Alpine Trek. But, it's up to you to determine whether a shoe repair is worth it - which is often influenced by which part of the shoe needs work and how much it will cost you. Soles wear out the quickest, and can be re-soled.

So, what can you do? Outdoor retailer Alpine Trek has given us some guidance:

Send it into an online repair service - which is a safe option, but may not be the cheapest.

Contact a cobbler - which may not have the original sole, but it may be the cheapest and fastest service.

Do it yourself - which, by no means, guarantees success - and can be a complicated repair.

Check the warranty - and you can file a warranty claim if the defect meets the requirements.

How long do walking boots take to break in?

If you're not in the know, "breaking in" is a term used to describe the process of wearing new shoes or boots so they fit around your feet. The moulding process will soften up the material and, with time, that uncomfortable rubbing will reduce. Unfortunately, heavier boots will take longer to break in.

Generally, dog walking boots can take anywhere from one to four weeks to break in. If you're looking for something a little more gender-specific, there are some stylish women's dog walking boots, too.
