Best travel-friendly cooling mat

This Pecute Dog Cooling Mat is long-lasting, high-quality and non-toxic, so safe for all pets. It can be rolled up easily, so it's ideal for travelling or for storing. The cooling pad is activated by your cat or dog when it lays down by absorbing their body heat to keep them from overheating. To clean the mat, all you need to do is spray it with a bit of water.

Customer review: "Bought this for my pooch as she is always looking for something cool to lay on and our last one perished due to general wear and tear (not from this seller or make), was looking for another especially for the summer and very hot weather already arriving and it’s the perfect size for her, I recommend an XL for bigger dogs like huskies, German shepherds, golden retrievers etc as there’s plenty of space for her to lay and cool all of her. Certainly does the trick and she’s so much more settled now we have one!! Great item, 100% recommend."

Pros

  • Waterproof, scratch-resistant and wear-resistant
  • Easy to clean and store

Cons

  • Mats are hard-wearing but not indestructible so pets may still be able to cause damage by biting and clawing

Best aesthetic cooling mat

This Volwco Dog Cooling Mat Pad can be used in your pet's bed. The mat's subtle design makes it a bit easier on the eyes than some other gel beds on the market. Made from fabric, it’s harder to destroy than other materials, and it’s washing machine friendly, so dirt and wear can be washed off with no problems.

Best strong cooling mat

Scruffs Self-Cooling Dog Mat is designed to provide much-needed cooling relief to your pet on those hot summer days. Designed to be five-10 degrees cooler than room temperature, there's no need to pop it in the fridge or freezer, it just needs to be sat unused for around an hour to reset the cooling properties. According to reviews, this mat is more rigid than some other mats on the market, and it folds away quickly and neatly.

Customer review: "I did my research before buying and was won over by knowing ‘scruffs’ makes quality reliable products that I’ve had no problems with in the past. The cool mat itself has been a saviour - my dog loves it and we take it everywhere, used throughout the house, on her bed, in the car, in the garden - she goes from panting where she’s clearly warm/too hot to laying on this cool mat and being relaxed and cool enough to stop panting and many a time has fallen asleep on it… excellent product, keep up the good work ‘Scruffs’."

Pros

  • Choice of sizes
  • No freezing or fridge required

Cons

  • Some reviewers would prefer if it didn't take an hour to cool down again

My dog and two cats have all taken turns lying on it and seem to like it. It was a bit smaller than I thought it would be and you would definitely need a bigger size for a bigger dog."

  • Ideal for pet beds, crates, kennels and car travel
  • Automatically reactivates itself

I scanned the Internet for some solutions until I came across this cooling pad. For less than a tenner on Prime I thought I'd give it a shot and hoped that it came before the sun disappeared for good, and it's honestly been one of the best things I've ever bought her (also thankful we can get some more uses from it and we got a little more sun too!)."

  • Activated by your pet sitting on it

Cons

  • Not designed for larger pets

FAQs

Features you should look out for in a pet cooling mat

There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a pet cooling mat:

Non-toxic

Many cooling mats contain gels that cool down when activated by pressure. Most, if not every, product made for pets will contain non-toxic gels, but it's always best to check the description first in case.

Durability

You will need to find a mat that is durable when taking your pet's sharp teeth and claws into consideration. And keep an eye on any nibbling!

The right size

The obvious factor to consider is the size of the mat. There is no point in getting your pet a cooling mat if they can only fit a tiny part of their body on it.

If you are unsure what size to get, then grab a tape measure and check the length of your pet. Most brands state the measurements so you can figure out how much space your pet requires.

Do cats and dogs sweat?

Although cats and dogs can sweat, it is not in the same way that people do, and that is why they can easily overheat. Our furry friends sweat through their paws and will pant to cool themselves down.

Do pet cooling mats really work?

Pets are just as susceptible to heat as people. Exhaustion, dehydration and overheating can quickly sneak up on dogs and cats, and that’s why they need to have a place they can cool down.

Pet cooling mats work the same as when dogs or cats lay down on the concrete outside or the cold kitchen floor. The heat from their bodies is transferred into the cool area until they reach the same temperature. Once they have reached this point, your pet will usually go and find somewhere else to lie down.

When your pet lies on a surface that's colder than it is, the heat is drawn from its body, and it can cool down. As cooling mats usually have gel or water inside, this is activated by your pet's body weight or pressure. After they have laid down on the mat for a bit, it will reach the same temperature as your pet's body. By this time, your pet will have cooled down enough to feel satisfied.

Mats and beds are better for them than lying on the ground, as it provides their aching limbs or joints more support and is much more comfortable for them.

As well as cooling mats and beds, you can get items like cat/dog cooling vests and toys to keep your pets cool during warmer weather spells.
